MAN has commenced production of its new 13-litre D30 diesel engine at its Nuremberg facility in Germany, marking the final generation of diesel engines to be manufactured at the plant.

This development follows over 100 years of diesel engine production at the site, as the company transitions towards electrification.

A total investment of €250m has been made to support this initiative, with €220m allocated to the Nuremberg plant and an additional €30m designated for crankshaft production at MAN’s Salzgitter facility.

The new D30 engine, which has been developed in collaboration with Traton Group brands, is designed to deliver enhanced fuel efficiency and reduced carbon emissions.

Said to be the largest standard engine in MAN’s portfolio, the new engine will power the 40-tonne MAN TGX and TGS semi-trailer tractors.

The production facility, which is expected to employ approximately 160 people, has production capacity of up to 50,000 engines per year.

As MAN transitions towards alternative propulsion technologies, the D30 engine serves as a bridge between traditional combustion engines and the company’s future electrified powertrains.

Its introduction coincides with MAN’s planned start of battery series production at the same facility in the coming months.

In combination with MAN’s PowerLion driveline and aerodynamic enhancements, the new TGX model fitted with the D30 engine achieves an average 5% improvement in fuel efficiency over its predecessor, with a corresponding reduction in CO2 emissions.

The D30 replaces the previous D26 and D15 engine series and will be available in six power variants ranging from 380 to 560 horsepower, with torque outputs between 2,100 and 2,800 Nm.

MAN CEO Alexander Vlaskamp said: “By 2030, every second vehicle we deliver to our customers is to have an emission-free drive.

“However, this also means that we will still need very efficient combustion engines for a long time on the road to the transformation to electromobility.

“In Nuremberg, we are therefore investing in both technologies, making the location future-proof and putting it on two strong legs. This is how we secure employment. And in Bavaria, we can count on the support of the Bavarian state government so that we can continue on this course.”

Last year, MAN partnered with energy provider E.ON and its subsidiary E.ON Drive Infrastructure to expand the charging infrastructure for commercial vehicles in Germany and Europe.
