BMW Group has announced that the production of MINI Cooper Convertible has commenced at the Oxford plant, reintroducing the model to its lineup for the first time since 2015.

The MINI Cooper Convertible now joins the MINI Cooper 3-Door and 5-Door models, boosting MINI Plant Oxford as the home of the MINI Cooper range.

The fourth generation MINI Cooper Convertible, announced last month, features a redesigned interior and exterior, along with an advanced digital experience.

MINI head Stefan Richmann said: “We are thrilled about the start of production of the MINI Convertible, which is now being produced again at the Oxford plant, the home of MINI.

“Unique in its class, the MINI Convertible offers unparalleled, brand-typical driving fun, combined with boundless freedom and great emotions: The iconic design combined with modern technology and connectivity makes this vehicle an unmatched open-air experience for our customers”.

BMW Group Plant Swindon provided body pressings and sub-assemblies, while BMW Group Plant Hams Hall in North Warwickshire manufactured the four-cylinder petrol engines.

The components are assembled at MINI Plant Oxford, where body shell production, painting, and final assembly occur.

The MINI Convertible was first introduced in 2004, following the relaunch of the MINI brand in 2001, and has remained a symbol of the MINI family.

From 2004 to 2008, MINI Plant Oxford produced 160,000 vehicles of the first-generation MINI Convertible, known for its retro styling and chrome roll-over arches.

The second generation, unveiled in 2009, saw 165,000 units built until 2015.

Production of the third-generation model moved to VDL Nedcar to accommodate the MINI Clubman at MINI Plant Oxford.

Over 150,000 Convertibles were produced at Nedcar until 2023, after which production returned to Oxford.

MINI Plant Oxford produced over 20% of all UK manufactured cars in 2023.
