At a conference on engine technology organized by Automotive News Europe, Ford of Europe executive vice president Lewis Booth said: “We should continue to work together toward the harmonisation of standards.”
Booth said that politicians should concentrate on the goal of reducing CO2 and should not give preference to individual powertrain technologies, as this would hinder innovation and customer acceptance of new technologies.
The European vehicle manufacturers’ trade association, ACEA, has been calling for harmonisation of taxation in Europe. At present 11 of 23 European countries have CO2-related taxes. In addition local government schemes such as the London congestion charge have CO2-related incentives. All the schemes are different and cause local market distortions.
Booth argued that it adds cost money to produce models to meet local standards, and that this is unnecessary.
