Nexteer Automotive has launched a new rear-wheel steering (RWS) system, designed to enhance the driving experience.
The system, which is particularly beneficial for heavier vehicles with long wheelbases, such as trucks, SUVs, and electric vehicles (EVs), is said to offer improved manoeuvrability, stability, safety, and performance.
The new RWS technology enables the rear wheels to turn up to 12 degrees in coordination with the front wheels.
This feature also significantly improves manoeuvrability at lower speeds, making it easier for drivers to navigate tight parking spaces, parallel park, and perform backup manoeuvres.
Additionally, the RWS system enhances vehicle nimbleness in urban settings and tight cornering scenarios.
At higher speeds, the system contributes to chassis responsiveness, vehicle stability, and safety.
It offers better control during sudden lane changes or evasive manoeuvres, while also increasing driver comfort and reducing fatigue during activities such as towing and trailering.
Said to be cost-effective and lightweight, the RWS system allows for quick adoption into vehicle platforms with minimal impact on EV range or fuel efficiency.
Furthermore, Nexteer’s RWS can be easily integrated with various vehicle types and may simplify rear axle designs.
The company’s approach also includes the potential for component and manufacturing process reuse, particularly with its rack-assist electric power steering (REPS) systems.
In vehicles equipped with steer-by-wire (SbW), the RWS could provide additional redundancy to meet safety requirements.
Nexteer’s RWS boasts an anti-rotation design that reduces friction, improves strength, and ensures long-term reliability.
Nexteer Automotive president, chief technology officer, chief strategy officer, and executive board director Robin Milavec said: “Nexteer’s approach to Rear-Wheel Steering delivers a cost-effective, lightweight and easy-to-integrate solution for OEMs so they can differentiate their drivers’ experiences with enhanced manoeuvrability, stability and comfort across all vehicle types.
“RWS addresses a convergence of many trends including the growing demand for trucks and SUVs, varying shifts to EVs and growing cities with challenges of urban driving.”
Nexteer said it has secured two RWS contracts with an undisclosed Chinese OEM, with production slated to begin in 2026.
