US battery electric vehicle (BEV) manufacturer Tesla received more than 70,000 bookings in China for its facelifted Model Y in the first week after the company began taking pre-orders for the new version of the model 10th January, according to local reports citing a source close to the company.
Production of the revised Model Y began at Tesla’s gigafactory in Shanghai last month, where the Model 3 is also produced.
Reports suggest that the new Model Y has been well accepted so far by the Chinese market, much more than the facelifted Model 3 which has disappointed since it went into production in October 2023.
Tesla shipments from its Shanghai plant fell by 3% to 916,660 units last year, more than half of the company’s 1,789,226 global sales. Retail sales in China rose by 9% to 657,102 units last year while exports fell by 25% to 259,558 units.
