General Motors has stopped production at its plant in St Petersburg, Russia until the end of the month as it tools up for the new Chevrolet Cruze.

The factory, which began vehicle assembly last November, has been operating a four day week for much of this year because of falling vehicle demand in Russia. The Cruze will supplement the Chevrolet Captiva and Opel Antara models also produced there and will return the plant to five day operations, the company said.

Production capacity is 70,000 vehicles a year.
