Ulyanovsk Auto Plant, or UAZ, has started equipping its cars with Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) Sat-Nav equipment, the company has said.

GLONASS, or Global Navigation Satellite System, is an alternative to the US Global Positioning System (GPS) and the EU’s planned Galileo positioning system. It currently covers Russia’s entire territory and is expected to cover the world at some time in the future.

AvtoVAZ and the Russian Institute of Space Device Engineering (RISDE) are also studying the possibility of installing GLONASS equipment in Lada cars.

The companies are considering installing the equipment in the Lada Kalina and Priora models as well as planned new C-class vehicles.
