China’s Great Wall Motors, best known for its SUVs and pickups, has launched a compact MPV car in South Africa.

The car is the Florid, which has been shown at a number of international motor shows and has a front-end that is very similar in appearance to that of the Toyota Yaris/Vitz.

Media reports say that the 1.5 litre engine car has gone on sale with a R109,990 (USD14,760) price-tag, and includes a 3-year/100 000km warranty.

Great Wall currently sells in a range of international markets including Algeria, Australia, Chile, South Africa and Syria.

There has been speculation that it is planning to sell cars in Europe.

Earlier this year Great Wall became the first independent Chinese car manufacturer to win European Whole of Vehicle Type Approval (WVTA) from the UK-based Vehicle Certification Agency.

The VCA has offices in China, and reportedly worked with Great Wall to achieve approval on four designs – the Florid MPV, the Coolbear baby SUV, the Hover 5 SUV and Wingle pickup.
