Hyundai Motor sales last month totalled 278,485 units vs 254,023 a year previously. Exports were down to 203,800 from 205,722 in June 2008, however.
Domestic volume rose sharply from 48,301 units to 74,685.
Exports did rise at affiliate Kia, however, to 97,411 from 90,622 the previous June. Total volume was up to 143,417 from 116,376 and domestic sales surged from 25,754 to 46,006.
Not so good at GM Daewoo Automotive and Technology where June sales plunged to 38,243 from 94,189 a year ago. Exports of 27,009 contrasted with the 80,557 vehicles shipped in June 2008; domestic sales slipped from 13,632 to 11,234.
Renault Samsung Motors launched a new model in South Korea in June and saw domestic sales of 10,455, up from 7,901 the previous year. But exports fell to 4,800 from 12,703 (the company makes the Koleos SUV for Renault) and total sales were 15,255 versus 20,604.

By GlobalDataStrike-hit Ssangyong Motor’s sales during June demonstrated the company’s current dire straits (it has had to get a court order to try and evict striking workers protesting proposed job losses from its plant). Just 217 vehicles were sold in June compared with 7,392 a year ago and exports of 20 contrasted with 5,490 a year ago. Domestic sales were 197 versus 1,902 in June ’08.
Ssangyong, majority owned by China’s SAIC Motor Corp, secured protection under court receivership in February.
The company said in a statement that production remained suspended in June due to the labour union’s strikes against restructuring plans (requiring that several thousand workers be sacked), leading to the weak sales.
