South Korea’s vehicle manufacturers have announced sales figures for May 2006, reported Reuters, showing a strong export performance, but fairly flat demand at home.

Hyundai said its May sales were up 14.3% compared to a year ago, despite its management being rocked to the core by a bribery scandal. It sold 228,712 vehicles in May, up from 200,011 a year earlier, thanks to strong overseas sales. It sold 183,712 units overseas, up 19.1% on May 2005, while domestic sales dropped 1.8% to 45,000 units. Year-to-date sales were up 11.6% to 1.1m units, thanks to a 10.1% increase in domestic sales and a 12% increase in exports, according to Reuters.

Kia’s global sales were up 11% in May to 116,216 units. Exports accounted for 93,961 units of that figure, up 13.8% on a year earlier, while domestic sales were virtually flat at 22,255 units.

GM Daewoo’s global sales were up almost 28% to 131,986 units. Domestic sales were down slightly to 9,559 units from 9,731 units a year earlier, while exports were up to 122,427 from 83,491 a year earlier.

Renault Samsung sold 12,434 cars in May 2006, up over 28% on a year earlier. Domestic sales were 9,509 units, compared to 9,310 a year earlier, but exports were up to 2,925 units from 368 units in May 2005.
