Ford plans to increase annual output at its plant in the eastern Spanish city of Almussafes, near Valencia, by 80% to 300,000 units.

Ford Spain chief Jose Manuel Machado made the announcement at an event to marking the start of exports from Almussafes of the redesigned Kuga compact SUV [called the Escape in North America], local news agency EFE News reported.

The industry in Spain “knows what the problems of expansion are” and “what we have to do,” Garcia-Margallo said, adding that Ford “has understood how to forge ahead” and will be “an ambassador” for ‘Brand Spain’.

The new Kuga, to be sold in 72 countries, is part of an investment plan of EUR1.11bn (US$1.44bn) in the Almussafes plant, Spanish industry’s largest investment in decades.

The Ford factory in Valencia will become a hub for for C-segment cars, one of the largest market segments in Europe.
