Ford is set to invest EUR70m to manufacture a new car engine and will earmark another undisclosed amount to streamline presses at its Almussafes factory in Valencia, its largest in Spain, a trades union official told just-auto.
He would not provide more details on the new engine, which will power Almussafes-built models such as the Focus and Fiesta sedans and will be distributed globally.
The union official said Ford’s engine plant is running at one third of production capacity and that the new engine will consolidate the site’s importance in the group’s manufacturing mix.
Ford and Spain’s leading workers’ union UGT recently signed a deal to secure Almussafes’ future through which the complex will churn out 350,000 vehicles a year after an investment of EUR425m.
