Toyota Motor is to recall 191,000 vehicles sold in North America and Japan due to faulty airbags, which are said to not inflate properly in the event of a crash.

The models affected are the Corolla compact sedan built between 2003 and 2008 and the Matrix hatchback built between 2005 and 2008. Reports suggest the front passenger airbags were installed during an earlier recall to replace faulty Takata airbags.

High temperatures are said to prevent the replacement airbags from unfolding fully as designed, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.

Toyota confirmed the replacement airbags were not made by Takata, but declined to say whether any injuries have occurred as a result of their malfunction.

The company said it will send out letter to notify owners in October and that dealers will replace the air bag assemblies at no cost to owners.

The Corolla accounted for over 300,000 of the 2.1 million vehicles sold by Toyota in the USA last year.
