Toyota Alabama has started of production of its new i-Force 2.4-litre turbo engine line for the redesigned Tacoma pickup truck.

The line is the result of a previously announced investment of US$222m.

“The completion of the turbo engine line marks a significant milestone and further supports job stability for our 2,000 employees,” said plant president Jason Puckett.

“Now, with Tacoma offering a hybrid option, every line at our plant includes engines for hybrid vehicles.”

The turbo engine line is the plant’s sixth building expansion and brings total investment to $1.5bn.

In 2023, the plant built a record 777,000 engines for vehicles manufactured in North America. It produces four- and six-cylinder motors.
