Toyota (GB) claims to have become the first vehicle manufacturer in Europe to use laser technology to improve vehicle security.
Contractor Retainagroup has installed a laser etching system at Toyota#;s two UK distribution depots at Portbury and Burnaston to mark vehicle glass with a code directly linked to the Vehicle Identification Number. The code and VIN are recorded on the International Security Register.
A bar code reader scans the VIN and automatically sets the unique code that can then be applied instantly to the vehicle glass. In addition to the code the telephone number of the International Security Register (ISR) is etched into the glass. This number is used for access to the ISR#;s 24 hour checkline.
The system takes one minute to mark clearly six pieces of glass and the marking, which conforms to the BSI standard, is impossible to remove without damaging the glass.
This method of marking and registration contributes to vehicle security and attracts the UK#;s “Thatcham” points which help to reduce the insurance group rating.
Toyota has been marking glass and parts and registering security data with Retainagroup for four years.
