General Motors’ British arm Vauxhall has finally confirmed it will sell the Australian-built Monaro sports coupe in the UK – badged as a Vauxhall.
The Monaro will be available from spring 2004 powered by a 5.7 litre V8 engine developing 328hp and 347lbs/ft of torque.
The stylish full sized four-seater coupe will accelerate to 60mph in just over six seconds and reach a top speed in excess of 160mph.
The Monaro was launched in Australia in 2001 and Vauxhall has decided to limit supply to 300 per year. A similar, but slightly restyled and more powerful version is just going on sale in the United States as the Pontiac GTO.
The car will be sold in the UK with a comprehensive specification including leather eight-way electric seats, 18 inch alloy wheels, full size driver, passenger and side airbags, electronic climate control and six-disc CD autochanger. Traction control will also be standard.
The Monaro will be priced from £28,500 and is claimed to offer more power per pound than any car on the UK roads.

By GlobalDataVauxhall managing director Kevin Wale, who took up the post after moving from Holden, said: “The Monaro is an icon in Australia and I am sure the UK car enthusiast will thoroughly enjoy it. This also demonstrates GM’s ability to bring the best of its products to fill niches in other markets.”
