Visteon Corporation is establishing a cooperative agreement with Nokia Smart Traffic Products to help integrate hands-free mobile communications with in-vehicle telematics technology in Europe. Together, the two companies will develop telematics products that target passenger cars, commercial, niche and recreational vehicles. Visteon and Nokia will co-operate in the design, development and creation of business strategies aimed at providing an in-car GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) phone system. Under terms of the agreement, Visteon will provide audio systems, DVD technology, on-board navigation and integrated display technology. As the cellular product developer, Nokia will provide wireless car connectivity that will enable various services to be brought into the vehicle.
Displayed for the first time at the ITS World Congress 2000 in November, in Turin, Italy, the GSM phone system uses Nokia Classic line phones to interface directly with Visteon audio products. The system provides cell phone operation through the vehicle’s radio, including memory dialing that encourages hands-free use of the phone through the vehicle’s audio system.
