Global registrations of the Ford Focus grew 16% year-on-year to make it the best selling car in the world, according to Ford’s analysis of data from Polk.

Ford says it registered 856,587 Focus models between January and September 2013 with China registering 304,000, an increase of 85%.

It also means that the Focus outsold the Toyota Corolla by 75,000 units although three months ago – the last time these figures were released – Toyota claimed that Polk data didn’t cover every market where the Corolla (also known as Auris in some markets) was sold – a claim disputed at the time by Polk.

What is undisputed is that the Focus is now China’s best-selling car and the Fiesta is Europe’s best-selling small car giving Ford two of the world’s top five selling cars. Combined Focus and Fiesta sales were 1.4m during the nine months to the end of September, according to Polk data.
