A variety of Ford Motor Company Fund charities in the United States will benefit from the net proceeds of the recent auction of some of the company’s concept cars which took place in Dearborn, Michigan last Sunday.

The sale raised $4,365,968 (around £UK2,950,000) for the cash-strapped vehicle maker which is in the midst of major restructuring and reorganisation following the departure of former CEO Jac Nasser.
“We’re delighted,” said Ford design vice president J Mays. “Not only have these collectors dug deep to help charity, many of them have said they plan to update or restore these concepts and give them a ‘second life’ by showing them at concours, museums and other auto shows.”
More than 100 bidders participated in the auction either by phone or in person. Auctioneer Christie’s cites its privacy policy as the reason a list of successful bidders and auction attendees will not be released.
The 1992 Ghia Focus concept sold for $1,107,500 while the lowest successful bid was $420 for a coffee table book signed by some of the creators of the new Thunderbird.

The concept collection included the 1996 Synergy and sports car models such as the 1992 Mach III Mustang, the Lagonda Vignale from 1993 and the Selene II and IXG Dragster created by Ghia in Turin in the 1960s – before the famous studios were effectively closed and their name reducted to little more than a badge on such unmemorable models as the 1977 European Cortina.
The memorabilia collection auctioned ranged from books and car models to concept sketches and Model A cufflinks.
