After five years on the market in Europe, the two-seat Smart car has been granted a certificate of conformity by the US Environmental Protection Agency, clearing the way for Stateside sales by Zap.

The Smart car is on display at the San Francisco motor show where Zap is also showing its other vehicle lines, including its new Worldcar, a battery-electric car recently certified by California’s Air Resources Board.
Zap is after 15,000 Smart sales per year. In May it signed an exclusive distribution contract with Smart-Automobile LLC for the rights to sell the cars in the United States. The two are preparing to launch marketing and distribution of the car with a near-term goal of 150 dealer outlets by the second quarter of fiscal 2005.
