Volkswagen Group and Chinese technology firm Horizon Robotics announced that they have agreed to expand their collaboration in the area of advanced intelligent driving technologies. The German automaker has agreed to adopt Horizon’s full-scenario smart driving solution Horizon SuperDrive (HSD) for its next generation of vehicles.
Volkswagen regards Horizon as one of the leading providers of computing solutions for smart vehicles in China. In 2023 Volkswagen’s software subsidiary CARIAD and Horizon established a joint venture called CARIZON, to help speed up the development of Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) and Autonomous Driving (AD) systems for the Chinese market as part of the automaker’s “in China, for China” strategy.
CARIZON, which now employs some 500 engineers, is developing a Level 2+ autonomous driving system based on Horizon Robotics’s Journey 6 chip. The company has now agreed to adopt Horizon’s HSD system, which combines hardware-software integration with an end-to-end software framework to deliver what is described as a “human-like” driving experience that balances traffic driving efficiency with smooth, composed handling.
