Mercedes-Benz upgrades automated parking with PARKTRONIC system

The system can detect parking spaces at speeds below 35km/h, marked by a blue P symbol on the driver's display.

Mercedes-Benz has improved its active parking assist with the PARKTRONIC system, making - it says - automated parking quicker, simpler, and more convenient.

The system's enhanced capability allows for automated parking at speeds of up to 4km/h, aiming to reduce the time and effort customers spend on parking maneuvers, particularly in constrained spaces, the company said.

The improved parking aid is accessible through a digital button on the car's display, with a status bar showing the parking progress.

If the vehicle has a 360° camera, the driver can choose from various camera views to help with parking.

The enhanced active parking assist comes as standard on several Mercedes-Benz models, including the E-Class, S-Class, EQS, EQE, and Maybach versions equipped with the parking package, which also features a reversing camera.

The system is adept at detecting suitable parking spaces when the vehicle is moving at speeds below 35km/h, indicated by a blue "P" symbol on the driver's display.

It is also capable of identifying spaces that offer as little as 50cm of clearance at either end.

Once a spot is located, the system instructs the driver to shift into reverse to initiate the automated parking sequence. For perpendicular spots, there is an option to park facing forward or to reverse into the space.

Safety remains a paramount concern, with the car utilising sensors to scan for potential hazards like crossing vehicles, cyclists, or pedestrians during the reverse movement.

If a risk is perceived and the driver fails to act, the vehicle can issue warnings and even engage emergency braking to avert accidents.

This safety mechanism is operational during both automated and manual parking.

In September 2024, Mercedes-Benz announced plans to upgrade vehicles with its automated driving system, enabling them to drive autonomously on German motorways at speeds up to 95km/h.

The upgrade, pending certification expected by the end of 2024, will be offered free of charge to cars currently equipped with the technology, increasing the speed limit from 60km/h.
